First, we characterize the joint distribution of parent and child income at the national level. The conditional expectation of child income given parent income is linear in percentile ranks. On average, a 10 percentile increase in parent income is associated with a 3.4 percentile increase in a child’s income. Second, intergenerational mobility varies substantially across areas within the United States. For example, the probability that a child reaches the top quintile of the national income distribution starting from a family in the bottom quintile is 4.4% in Charlotte but 12.9% in San Jose. Third, we explore the factors correlated with upward mobility. High mobility areas have (i) less residential segregation, (ii) less income inequality, (iii) better primary schools, (iv) greater social capital, and (v) greater family stability.

I am writing following the government’s announcement yesterday cancelling or postponing public examinations.
There is, I am afraid, no clarity from the authorities but my instinct is that schools will be asked to provide a detailed sample of evidence for each of you to support grade predictions in each subject and that we will be asked to make this prediction at the time you would normally have taken their exams. I imagine these will also be sense-checked against the grades typically secured by each school in recent years (which, in Brighton College’s case, have consistently been in the top 1% in the country, which should provide further reassurance).
In expectation of this, we will be refocusing our teaching of the Upper 6th classes next term so that it will be focused on preparing you for a series of timed assessments, for which you will be properly prepared, which we can then use to support our predictions. This will supplement any other evidence we already possess, derived from the mock exams and class tests already taken. In this sense, our approach will be very granular. We will focus on each subject, working together to ensure that by the time we need to make a prediction for each exam, we have in place a range of rigorously assessed supporting evidence of which you can be proud and which is a fair reflection of how you would have performed. Teachers will also ask you, in due course, to provide them with copies of any additional work you have completed which you would like to include in your prediction sample, providing details of the circumstances in which it was produced.

我從未想過,2020年,可以比1942年二次世界大戰,更加混亂。
我不同意撤銷公開試。推遲則是必須的。學生們沒有考試的烙印,自己的證書、學歷,都不會來得踏實。
